Scholarships For Latino College Students

If you are working on a bachelor, master or doctorate degree and you are Latino, you are eligible to receive scholarships for Latino college students.

This is not the only criteria of course you have to apply and meet other requirements but it sure does narrow it down to Latinos.

There are wealth of scholarship information on the web today that there is no excuse why Latinos are not entering college and finishing like other students. Too often Latinos start their higher education at the junior college level and never finish past two years. It cannot be a financial matter because there is money available.

Indeed money is available for students like you who are Latino. You must be willing to do a little work though. Not physical but more mental. You must be able to write to a board of people. These are the people who will approve your application and send money to the school of your choice. You must do research on the scholarship itself and find out what they are about and integrate that knowledge into you writing style.

Grant writing is crucial for Latinos because it is basically asking for money. Just like people who do not open their mouths don’t eat. People who do not ask for money usually do not receive any. So sit back in the sidelines and watch people who are on the field or throw a number on your back and get in the game.

Just like credit, you must have your name in the system for people to send you scholarship applications. Every application you fill out could be worth hundreds if not thousands every semester.

College Scholarship Letters of Recommendation

As a college student myself, one of the most difficult tasks of applying for college scholarships has always been getting letters of recommendation.

Many applications have very specific requirements for the letter of recommendation, others have very few requirements. While you want to make sure all requested information is in the letter of recommendation, there are a few things you want to consider when asking a professor to write a letter of recommendation for you.

Do you talk with your professors?

Talking with your professors about the course and asking questions in class and outside of class is a good thing. It allows the professor to get to know what kind of student you are regardless of the final grade you might receive. Intelligent questions and discussion far outweigh how you do on a test because a test only shows whether you can answer a question correctly or not. It is not necessarily indicative of what kind of student you are. When requesting letters of recommendation, try to request them from professor of classes in which you have significantly participated in. In general, these are the professors that can give you the best letters of recommendation.

Have you had multiple classes with the same professor?

Once you have decided on a major and take classes within your major, you may find that you have had a professor more than once. In general, this is good because the professor has had continued experience with your work and can generally provide a fuller evaluation of you as a student and your work.

Have you had a professor for a small class?

Many lower level classes are large classes that may have up to 200 students in them. These are not usually good classes for a professor to evaluate your work. In fact, you may have the best communication with a teaching assistant rather than the professor. In many cases, the professor may not even know who you are. Professors that teach small classes have a better chance of getting to know you and evaluating you and your work so it is generally better to request letters of recommendations from them.

These are just some considerations you should think about when choosing a professor for writing a letter of recommendation. However, they should not completely limit you.

Obama’s Pell Grant May Increase to $5,550

President Obama recently made it a priority to increase the value of the prized Pell Grant to an impressive $5,350 for the 2009-2010 year. However he is considering raising it again to $5,550 for the 2010-2011 academic year. This is an increase of $200 over the previous year and there is no doubt this money will come in handy for many people.

It is believed that this increase will make the grant available to an additional 260,000 students as more people in each state will receive a grant and the average award in each state will be increased.

Pell Grant Facts

The Pell Grant is a post-secondary educational Federal grant that is given out by the U.S. Department of Education.

No repayment of the grant money is required, so the people who receive the assistance are getting money for free. This money can then be used on educational expenses.

Who is Eligible?

The eligibility for the Pell Grant is based on financial need. Once you fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form, you can find out whether you meet the criteria for the Obama grant.

Generally low-income students are more likely to receive the grant money but anyone can apply.

How Much Will I Get?

Factors that effect how much grant money you will receive include:

- Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
- School attendance costs
- Whether you are a full time or part time student
- If you are attending school or a full year or less

The Pell Grant is an amazing opportunity for people who require money for college. Forget student loans: rely on scholarships and grants to provide that much needed cash for your education.
